God Given Daisies — by Carole Devecka
When I saw the video of a dog dancing the Merenque last week in our Fuzzy Tales selection ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UenPv_Ajfw ) I was reminded of my dog from 55 years ago!
Lucky always stayed by my side - until my brother was born. (We are 14 years apart.) Even then, I was still more fun for Lucky to play with until my brother learned to walk, run, and then ride a tricycle. That’s when Lucky went on brother-watching duty 24/7! I was modeling and traveling a lot so Lucky had a full time job taking care of my brother.
Even though I was modeling and traveling, we weren't allowed to go out. So our parents built a night club in the basement and all the celebrations were held there! At that time an older cousin and I were on a dance team together, but he lived far away so I would practice some of the tricks and dance steps with female cousins and a support beam in the basement.
One day Lucky saw me holding onto a pole in the basement while practicing. She kept standing on two legs, jumping up and down and turning when I did... If I would use the handle of the refrigerator, Lucky would do the same thing... If I turned, she did too. So I started using Lucky as my partner -- not the pole!
Of course Lucky then became the show whenever people got together… Although it was really easy to dress her up when we were dancing Lucky didn't need the costume to perform...
I never needed to use anything to train her. My hugs and rubs, and saying “Good Girl, Lucky!” at the end of our dance was all she wanted.
Until last week I never really saw another dog dance the way Lucky did or for as long, standing and dancing on two paws.
I am still smiling from seeing that dog last week and remembering how Lucky I am to have had Lucky in my life....
Have a blessed day.
