One suggestion I might make for the home cook is to get a subscription to COOK'S ILLUSTRATED magazine.
COOK'S ILLUSTRATED is a different kind of cooking magazine. It is small, only about 30 pages per issue and usually has illustrations rather than photographs . It is a mixture of culinary tips, techniques, recipes, reviews of food products and appliances.
The thing that I like best about the publication is that it will go over many different ways to cook one particular thing and explain why each method did or didn't work and finally show which one gave the best results.
