Culinary Tips From Chef Raven
Make Things Easy on Yourself
One of the things I tend to procrastinate on is making bread in my bread machine. I get annoyed at myself when I have to spend $3.09 a loaf on bread at the store considering that the alternative is so cheap. We go through at least 2 loaves of bread a week, so this can really add up.
The one part holding me back was that the bread machine is stored on one of the shelves in my pantry room. Even though it is not tucked away in some high cabinet somewhere, I still have to go on the other side of the house and carry it back to the kitchen. There isn't room for it on our kitchen counter but there is room for it in our garage, on a counter right outside the kitchen and there is even an electrical outlet right there. The only problem with this solution is that I don't get the bread smell in the kitchen!
The other thing that has been holding me back is that each time I wanted to make bread, I had to lug a 20lb bag of bread flour out of the big freezer and measure out four cups. Here's where we get to the real purpose of this tip. I measured out 4 cups of flour each into several dozen Ziploc type bags and then marked them clearly and stored them in the freezer. Now, the next time I want to make bread, all I have to do is pull out one of the bags. It's not wasteful because the bags can be reused over and over again.
I'm just using the bread flour as an example, this premise can be applied to many cooking (and non-cooking) things as well.
