Howdy Folks and Good Day!

We receive so many gifts and blessings on any given day that if we kept a running tally we would surprise ourselves!

But the truth is these gifts usually get lost in the hubbub of life.

Life itself is a gift but when we wake up in the morning, we’re usually thinking about what we have to do this day, what to wear, getting ready and leaving for work on time.  Once out the door, we’re focused on the commute and ten million other things so the gift of life never has a chance to get counted or even recognized.

There are so many things we take for granted!  At least until we are reminded of them.

For instance, a wonderful woman at our Spiritual Circle on Saturday shared the story of her son with us.  He had difficulty hearing and by the time he was ten years old, he was considered completely deaf… Until at age 37, he received a cochlear ear implant.  The implants don’t work instantly; although you “hear” with them, the mind has to learn to decipher the sounds much like learning a new language.  The happiest day of her son’s life was the day he was able to use a telephone thanks to the implant and retraining himself!  What a gift!

How many of use the telephone every day and sometimes wish it would go away?  Can you imagine what life would be like without being able to use a phone?  Or having the only sound you hear being what’s inside your head?

The gift of hearing is definitely one to be appreciated.

Yet another example of a gift we overlook comes from a dear friend of mine who broke her hip last year. Shortly after it was healed, she fell and broke her femur.  She’s been in a rehabilitation facility since.  But just a few weeks ago, she was able to stand for the first time since the fracture.  And… she got to put shoes on!   You see, her feet had been very swollen and because she couldn’t stand, she remained in bed. Her feet were cloaked in socks and sponge tourniquets to keep her legs and hips evenly balanced.  Wearing shoes again was a huge step.  And speaking of steps, using the balance bar, she’s actually been able to take 12 steps in a row during therapy!

How often do we put our shoes on and just take them for granted? Yet the ability to wear shoes, as well as being prosperous enough to afford them and healthy enough to walk in them is a major gift!

Another lovely friend has an incredible daughter who is paraplegic.  Despite being wheel chair bound, her determined 20-something year old daughter has done everything from marathons to sky-diving.  She’s working on her Master’s degree and regularly drives herself from San Diego to Los Angeles.  She is a gift to those who witness her courage, her strength, her determination.  And her mom is an incredible gift of unconditional love, peace, and healing to all those who know her.

These amazing women remind us not only of the physical gifts we take for granted but grant us the gift of inspiration.

Sometimes the gifts seem so trivial we don’t even realize they are gifts… like the sun rising in the morning and the moon shining down on us at night… a soft summer breeze blowing through green leafed trees humming a wind song to lull us… a butterfly flittering from flower to flower gracing us with its joyful colors and movement…

Then there’s the traffic light actually staying green long enough for us to make it through (or even yellow!)… having a job to go to… being safe in our bed… and having a home to come home to… Of course, family and friends are definitely gifts to be cherished!

In another small example, the zipper on my favorite jogging suit broke off in the wash last week.  My husband suggested getting a zipper pull to repair it.  I didn’t even know there was such a thing.  I decided to search online for one. Not only did I find zipper pulls, but discovered you could get “designer” ones in just about any shape, color or size needed… and for much less than the cost of replacing the jogging suit!  Out of curiosity, I decided to check for an “angel zipper pull” and had 20 pages of selections to choose from!   I was astonished.  All I wanted to do was repair the broken zipper and I was treated to something even better than I knew existed – with angels nonetheless! What a gift!

We are blessed with more things than we can possibly imagine.  We receive so many gifts in so many ways throughout our lives.  Let’s take time to notice them and give thanks!

SFPNN CHALLENGE:  Notice all the things which make you happy, work in your favor, answer a prayer, give you an unexpected (good) surprise, or which you see as a gift this week.  Write them all down.

Nothing is too trivial.  No detail is too small.  If the gift is that your hair turned out the first time you tried to style it, and that you actually have hair, write it down!  If the gift is hearing a song you really like on the radio, write it down!  If it’s your friend calling and sharing a joke, write it down!  If it’s catching a glimpse of the sun on your lunch break and feeling it warm your skin and invigorate your body, write it down!  If it’s your fur baby nuzzling up and loving you, write it down!

At the end of the week, think back and see if there were any other “gifts” you might have overlooked.  Write them down.  See if you can get a list of AT LEAST 50-100 GIFTS.  It’s easier than you think!

Afterall, Life itself is a gift!

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

AMY’S DIVINE SENSE OF HUMOR
by Linda Leach Johannessen

When my daughter Amy was first being treated for leukemia, she was a high school senior and attended a local catholic high school.  Mother Therese came to visit her convent in the city and a Mass was being celebrated in her honor.  The catholic schools in the diocese were sending students from each school as part of a delegation to the Mass and Amy was chosen as a participant.  Although Amy had been admitted to the hospital, she was given a medical pass from her doctor to attend and was instructed to come right back afterwards.

To make a long story short, Amy met and was blessed by Mother Therese!

When she returned to the hospital Amy was almost a celebrity.  Everyone wanted to touch her, because she had been touched and blessed by the dear Sister.  Even the newspapers were calling about the "sick girl" with a bald head and found us at the hospital!

That evening Amy was sitting in her bed when the nurse came in to collect a urine specimen.   As the nurse was walking away, Amy gave her a side glance and casually said..."be careful with that—it's holy water."

:-b

Two years later Amy relapsed.  We were sitting in the doctor's office, waiting to discuss the next step.  Amy was browsing through a magazine when she came across a picture of Mother Therese.

She showed it to me, sighed and said..."Well, I guess Mother Therese's blessing only comes with a 2 year warranty."

I couldn't help but laugh, even though it was a very sad day.  Amy just had a magnificent sense of humor.

A BIG SURPRISE!

By Nancy Leslie

I’ve been taking horse-back riding lessons at a local horse farm.  On Monday morning, I got an email from my trainer. She got up at 8am and went out to the barn and her very pregnant mare had her foal over night. A bouncing baby boy!

He was born, got up, and mom cleaned him.  He was already dry and bouncing by the time they got out to the barn.

My husband Mark and I went out that evening and took photos. The foal is already strong, smart, and ready to take on the world!

I went back for a full lesson on Tuesday night. All went very well.

The foal had to have his baby shots from the vet; it took 3 people to hold him down!  They decided afterwards to let those long legs stretch and put him in the arena.  He flipped over twice trying to resist a halter and lead-rope. But once in the arena, he kicked up his heels and ran and jumped and bucked for about a half hour before they put him back in the stall.

By the time I got there for my lesson, he was just pooped and laying around the stall. I did get him up to play with him though. They sure are fun!!!!

Hope you enjoy the photos of a baby less than 24 hours old.   HE’S SO CUTE!!!!!

Unexpected Surprises

I hope everyone had a very pleasant week and week-end, and celebrated Mother's Day just the way you wanted.

Last year my daughter Faye and her husband gave my mother, my daughter Robin and her daughter Mindy, and me, cards with a message saying she wanted to take the four generations of girls to Longwood Gardens in Pa. because we all love flowers and gardening. The car trip would take approximately two and a half hours each way.

As it happened "Life got in the way of the best made plans" and we didn’t get there until this week, one year later!  Only three out of the five of us were able to go.

The weather was great, and Longwood Gardens was absolutely beautiful. It was tulip time at the Gardens. Acres and acres of tulips were in full bloom.

My mother has bad macular degeneration and is 95% blind. However, she was able to enjoy the vast fields of many different flowers and colors… Colors of flowers that if painted by an artist, you would believe were too vivid, and too extreme. Yet here Mother Nature in all her glory was able to give an almost completely blind person the truly magnificent opportunity to see her colors in all her glory.

In the Conservatory at the Gardens were orchids, roses, hibiscus, unusual shaped bamboo plants, and bonsai trees. I mentioned I always liked bamboo, but was told to truly get their (feng shui) meaning of peace, love, tranquility, and prosperity, they should be given or received as a gift. So I never bought one for myself.

Later, during the week, I went into a Chinese restaurant to pick up some take-out food. They do a complete lunch for $4.00...and cook it fresh, right there before you... You can imagine how busy they are!  The girls and the cooks work very hard and spend long hours there.

On the counter were bamboo stalks sitting in a large vase looking very straggly but I guess they were given to them to wish them good luck and prosperity.  I asked one of the girls if I could take the vase and bring it to the nearby florist. She nodded yes, with a strange look on her face.

The florist was five doors away. I was surprised to find a new owner there.  I introduced myself and told her that for a long time I always bought stems of orchids in little viles and would give them away to people I meet or take care of.  The previous owner would wrap each orchid in a cellophane sleeve with a little curly ribbon and that’s I how I became known as the Orchid Lady.

Today, however, I asked if she could please fill this vase of bamboo with some inexpensive flowers to give to the girls at the Chinese restaurant. She said it was a wonderful and thoughtful idea and as I was leaving she added orchids to the bamboo stalks and other flowers...making it now a very expensive bouquet for only ten dollars.

I told her she would be blessed and would prosper as the new owner!

Then I brought the exquisite arrangement back to the girls at the Chinese restaurant.   With tears in their eyes and shaking their heads, they kept saying "Thank you, Thank you."

Five minutes after I got home, my bell rang. It was the UPS man with a package for me.  I asked my daughter to read who it was from and she said "The Macaluso Family…" I asked "Who?!” in disbelief.  It was sent from one of the teens (now grown up, with three beautiful children) who lived some of the stories in God Given Daisies. She sent it for Mother's Day saying she thinks of me often.

I opened the box and in it was a beautiful bamboo plant, the type that is shaped and curled around!

What a pleasant and unexpected surprise and a lesson that God uses the least likely to give us our heart’s desires.

What you say and do really does come back to you.
