Howdy Folks and Good Day!
Throughout my life I’ve been amazed by the things people can do! From singing, acting and dancing, to
painting, sculpting and cooking, to brain surgery, rocket science and flying
air planes!
I’ve actually learned how to do some of the things which have fascinated me, yet others still intimidate me a wee bit… like getting up in front of a large crowd and speaking or singing. Like everything else, when I’m ready, I’ll learn how to do it. (In fact, Mark and I are signed up to take a course next year by Peak Potentials called Train the Trainer which teaches you how to do just that. Well, at least the speaking part—they’d really have their hands full with me if it included singing!)
In the meantime, I learn as I can from other people and
allow myself to be inspired by those who do what they do really well. One person who really inspires me is opera
singer
Andrea Bocelli. I have to admit, I was never much into
opera. But one night while Mark and I
were in
Aside from eventually purchasing one of Andrea’s CDs and frequently listening to his music, I never gave him much thought. Sure, he has great talent and expresses incredible passion through his voice, but when it’s all said and done, he’s just another person—at least that’s what I thought.
That is until Ginny of Canada sent me the story of his life. Talk about a truly amazing and inspiring person! I had NO IDEA Andrea Bocelli was blind! He had such strength, calmness and peace about him during his performances. (I certainly wouldn’t have! I’d be a nervous wreck on stage. LOL!) The times I’ve seen him on TV, there weren’t any tell-tale signs to give away his so-called disability. Perhaps that’s because he has learned to see with his heart…
If you’re interested in learning more about Andrea Bocelli from his mother Eddi’s perspective, please visit:
http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Choir/6642/eddi.html
It is truly fascinating… Especially when
you learn about Andrea’s request when he visited
If you want to hear some of his music, just click his name, (Andrea Bocelli) it will take you to Amazon. Scroll down to the section that says "Listen to Samples" and click "Listen" after any of the songs. For some reason the sound is a little bit better under the "Windows Media" option than the "Music Sample" one.
Thanks for sharing this Ginny! And thank you to Andrea Bocelli for inspiring us all, and to his mother, Eddi for having the strength and courage to make the choices she did.
With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

COMFORT FOODS
By Guest Author, Bernice Becker
Here is an essay I
wrote last year about food. I hope you enjoy it.
Comfort foods. What are they? What do they do? Let me tell you. They help you to feel better until the feelings wear off.
Usually the foods that are tasty are those with sugar and fat. They are the calorie laden foods that affect your body in less than healthy ways.
When one chomps on a delicious piece of chocolate fudge cake one will desire more and more! These urges are difficult to stop.
Then a day of reckoning finally comes. Perhaps you are annoyed when you try to pull up the zipper of your skirt and you have to use a large safety pin, hoping it stays put, as the zipper doesn't close.
Maybe you decide you have the courage to go to Weight Watchers but you are afraid of the White Monster. Do you know what the White Monster is? It is the SCALE. You are afraid to get on it as you know that you have gained weight. You sigh, "This scale is way off. I guess they didn't balance it." No one answers because everyone knows the scale is balanced. Why hurt your feelings?
Then come the months of saying to oneself, "I know I must cut down on the rich food." But you don't. Maybe you don't because in many cases it is not what you eat but 'what eats you.'
But there is good news. Food is not the only way to use our mouths to comfort us.
There is actually another kind of 'food' that we use our mouths for, that comforts body, mind and soul and not a pound is added to our body fat.
That kind of wonderful non-caloric 'food' can be a pleasant conversation. You indulge in it with a stranger and instead of gaining weight, you gain a new friend. The 'food' might also come in the form of a wonderful movie. You watch the movie, laughing, enjoying, listening and suddenly 'what eats you' fades into the background. You are in a great mood.
Or perhaps you offer to help someone and you use your mouth for one of the greatest gifts of all--doing a good deed. Maybe you drive and the other person does not. Your invitation to take her shopping makes her day. She is grateful and you are filled up, not with candy but with good feelings.
So you see, when one requires a lot of comfort food, something is missing. Being a widow, I know that. But why don't you make an effort to find comfort elsewhere. I have and it works.
Oh, my it is late. Time to go to bed. I'll get into my bed with my cozy comforter and watch a good comedy. Then I'll doze off, very content and comforted.
However, I'm still looking for excitement. I'll be hoping for an exciting dream that might come true!

THE BEST
I don’t think Mr. B actually intended to say that I wasn’t the smartest kid on the high school debate team. He was just trying to make a point – what it was completely eluded me, but since I wasn’t all that bright, what do you expect?
It had something to do with effort, now that I think about it. He was grading a test we had taken and noticed that the person in the class with the highest IQ received the exact same score as the person in the class with the lowest IQ. He was using that simple irony to make the point that the ultimate achievement of both students had less to do with intellect than exertion.
It was a good point but it was lost on us, mostly because we couldn’t get past the IQ thing. During the course of our school years we had undergone a battery of IQ tests, the results of which had been steadfastly kept from us. It was felt that if we actually knew our respective IQ scores we would perform accordingly. Those with high IQs would confidently achieve noteworthy success in the classroom, while those with lower IQs would . . . you know . . . not.
But we didn’t care about that. All we knew is that Mr. B had unsuspectingly presented us with a rare opportunity. If we got together and shared our scores we could probably figure out which of us had the highest IQ in the senior debate class, which in turn would tell us who had the highest IQ in the school (since we more or less assumed that we were the school’s best and brightest – and who was going to argue with a bunch of debaters?).
So we huddled around a lunch table and made a chart. All of the scores were different – except two. Kay got a B+ with her 89 score – the exact same as me. All eyes around the table were focused on the two of us. A sudden awkwardness hung heavily in the air along with the mixed fragrances of cafeteria pizza, Clearasil and Hai Karate.
I don’t remember anyone saying anything at that point. Nobody had to. We all knew. In addition to being gorgeous, with her long brown hair and beautiful big eyes, Kay was one of the smartest kids in the class. And I was... well, I was a good guy. I got along with everybody (OK, ALMOST everybody – but could I help it if I had to break up with Janet? I mean, Shelley was on the drill team, for Pete’s sake. What was a hormonal teenage boy supposed to do?).
But as a debater I was a good orator. Orators give long, prepared speeches. Orators tell stories. They don’t have to mix it up in the intellectual give and take of Lincoln-Douglas debate, which requires practice, preparation and . . . you know . . . thinking and stuff.
At first I was embarrassed by the revelation in front my peers. In my mind I had finally been exposed. For years I had struggled to keep pace with my debate partners. I worked hard at gathering information, and I was pretty good at being the first speaker – the one who gives a planned speech. But as the debate wore on I would get lost in the rhetoric. Debate judges want to hear logic, reason and incisive rationale. I wanted to tell stories, and stories don’t carry much weight when you’re arguing whether or not the judicial system should be significantly changed.
But by the end of school that day it was clear that nobody on the debate team was stunned by the revelation. They already knew that I wasn’t the most active verb in the debate team lexicon, and they accepted me just the same. I began to feel relieved. I didn’t have to pretend anymore. Mr. B and I decided that the judicial system would be just fine without my input, and I shifted my focus from debate to oratory – where, it turns out, judges like stories.
I understand that Kay went on to a successful career as an attorney. I haven’t spoken to her in years, but I’m sure she’s still right there among the best and the brightest.
And I’m still telling stories.
Regardless of what Mr. B intended.
