Howdy Folks and Good Day!
If asked if we live in the past, most of us would say no. We’re too busy living in the present moment
to even focus on the past! But truth be
known, our past may be affecting us more than we realize.
Human beings learn a great deal by remembering our experiences, and whether these experiences had positive or negative outcomes. We’ve all heard the “hot stove” example… If you put your hand on a hot stove and get burned, you’ll remember it and are not likely to put your hand near the hot stove again; especially in a way which would get you burned.
Because we learn from our memories, we can “add fuel to the fire” so to speak every time we feel like we’ve gotten burned. There’s the base memory, say burning our hand on the stove, then every time something similar happens our mind ties it to the base experience, strengthening the original memory and emotions.
Maybe this time, we get splattered by some hot grease. The mind shuffles through our files, lenses and filters and says, “Hey, I got burned cooking before when my hand touched the stove. And I just got burned cooking again by grease. Cooking must be really bad!” But we have to keep cooking to survive. Should we get burned again, which we probably will, it reinforces cooking as something which hurts us.
In reality we’ve probably been nurtured and nourished much more from cooking than we’ve been burned by it. But because the nourishing experiences weren’t as intense, we forget them and hang onto the experiences and memories of getting burned.
These memories can act like a speck of dust on the lens of our perception. The more we get hurt, the more dirt ends up on the lens which filters our view of the world and our personal experiences.
What happens if we get “burned” in relationships?
None of us are perfect, and therefore there’s really no such thing as a “perfect” relationship, although there can be some FABULOUS ones!
Even with lots of love in our hearts and the very best intentions, we sometimes hurt others and allow ourselves to get hurt by others. Like the hot stove, when we get hurt, we remember it. We learn from it. We add it to the filters of our perceptions and experiences and become leery of getting too close again.
If we’re in a long term committed relationship, that can mean a whole lot of dirt over time! As a result, the filter we’re looking through can become clouded with past hurts and fears – so clouded it begins to blur our present and future.
Think about your current relationships. Are they happy, trusting, loving, and intimate? Or are you always wondering… What’s going to happen? Will they leave me or betray me? What are they going to do this time?
If you find your time together seems heavy or strained, there’s a good chance you’re looking through some really dirty lenses covered and gunked up with past stuff!
So what’s a person to do when the relationship gets clouded through the filters of fear?
Take off the glasses, wash them clean, and look again! Repeat.
It’s so important to step back when things feel “off.” And make no mistake, when we try to view love through a lens of fear, it does feel off, and awkward, and even scary at times. This can be our clue to step back and release the situation from being associated with past experiences.
Releasing the past doesn’t mean being naïve; it does mean we don’t project past experiences, behaviors or even broken promises into our current and future situations. If those we love are trying to love us in the present moment, we do our relationships a disservice by trying to hold onto past disappointments and projecting them into the current experience. However, we do ourselves and our relationships a great service when we focus on the present moment and sending love into our current circumstances.
Make sure you’re looking at the present through the eyes of love instead of the clouded lens of fear and the past. It could literally transform your life and your relationships.
Can somebody pass me the Windex?

UPDATE ON CASTAWAY, THE EXPECTANT DOLPHIN
Castaway's short training sessions continue, and her
behavior during medical procedures is evidence of her comfort level with human
involvement.
Ultrasound was performed this weekend, confirming that the
calf is a large one, and condition of both mother and calf appears to be sound.
Castaway's appetite has been quite healthy throughout the
past week, and she responds immediately when "called" (we use a flashing
strobe light) at feeding times, as it has been determined that Castaway is deaf.
Pre-recorded dolphin sounds are played in the water at
certain times through the day. In a pod, the fetus experiences a wide variety
of dolphin-emitted sounds. Since Castaway and the calf in her womb are isolated
from other animals, it is hoped that the recordings will help fill the void of
pod communication and stimulate the fetus' development.
The Research Team is recording Castaway's infrequent vocalizations and echolocations. Staff assists by maintaining detailed Ethograms (observation and detailed notation of Castaway's behavior and activities at specific time intervals) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Wednesday WORD — by Diane, The
PRESENT MOMENT
"Realize
deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your
life."
—
Eckhart Tolle
It's hard to believe almost
half the year is over already. The good news is that summer is just around the
corner.
When you think of summer, what
comes to mind? Kids out of school? Neighborhood
block parties? Softball or baseball games? Time at the beach or at a swimming pool? Warm
evenings sitting on your patio with friends? With more daylight hours,
the list of things to do is endless.
I have my own list of things to
do in the next four months. Some I have
planned for several months such as going to Asilomoar
in
I also have a list of local
places and things I want to do. No
matter what I am doing, I need to remember that the present moment really is
all I have and to be mindful of my surroundings and enjoy whatever I am doing wherever
I am.
What is on your summer agenda?
Have you even thought about what you'd like to do yet? If you don't have formal vacation plans, take
some time to sit down and make a list of what you would enjoy doing this summer. What has drawn your attention? What have you meant to always do, but never
got around to? What place is calling
your soul to visit?
Go to the local library or bookstore and browse in the travel section. Notice what catches your attention. Look at the travel websites or even your local newspaper for ideas close to home. The ideas are endless if you let your mind wander.
What ever you decide to do,
remember to enjoy the moment and realize that you'll never have the Summer of 2007 again.
Make the most of it.
Until September when we start writing again… Have a happy and safe summer.
