Howdy Folks and Good Day!

Do you believe in miracles?

I sure do!  Yesterday I experienced yet another one.

Around 2:30pm I was on the way home from a chiropractor appointment and visiting a friend in a nursing home.  It was a beautiful day and originally I thought I might take the scenic route through the mountains and stop at the beach to meditate and clear my energy.  But for some reason, I felt as if I should just head home.

Prior to getting on the freeway, I noticed a little bit of a rattling sound.  I have a bunch of CDs, empty water-bottles, and other stuff behind the passenger seat so I wasn’t too concerned.   I rounded the corner to my favorite vista on the 101 freeway and was thoroughly enjoying cruising down a 6% graded “hill” taking in the scenery when I noticed a very sweet scent which reminded me of maple syrup.   “That’s strange” I thought with a quick glance at the oil gauge which looked normal.  There are several homes and restaurants in the area so I just added it to the rest of my sensory enjoyment along with the sunshine, distant mountains and blue skies.

Immediately after the bottom of the hill I saw a small amount moisture on my hood and noticed smoke or steam coming from my engine.  I was in the far left lane, and traffic was heavy.  “OK, God, you gotta help me get to the other side.” It seemed to instantly open up and I was able to make it across five lanes of traffic to the far right side just in time to make the off ramp—only one mile from my favorite mechanic!

By this time my temperature gauge read over the High mark and the check engine and battery lights were on.  With the road being on a slight incline, I was able to coast most of the way back to my mechanic, putting as little stress on the engine as possible.

The engine was no longer smoking when I arrived but the gauges were still on high alert.  I told the mechanics what happened and they looked unusually worried.  (Normally, they assure me everything will be fine.)  After asking me several questions, they were expecting the worst.  I just smiled and told them I was holding out for the best possible outcome. They gave me a ride home and let the car cool before looking at it.

Knowing the likelihood that I could have blown a head gasket or have totaled the engine, I prayed for God to work a miracle.  I asked Him to save the car’s engine and just let us replace the parts that had caused the trouble.  In my mind’s eye, I could see my car being worked on: the radiator, hoses, water pump and that sort of thing.  But the engine was fine.

I left it in God’s hands and took a nap...

When my mechanic called to tell me the diagnosis she sounded really surprised.   My Miata somehow ended up with a radiator leak and the water pump is probably damaged.  They also need to replace the timing belt (which affects the water pump) and some hoses, valve gaskets, seals and other items.  What’s amazing is that neither the engine nor the head gaskets were damaged!  BJ said Miatas are notorious for blowing head gaskets in the same situation I was in, and that they truly expected to find them totaled.  It would have cost me a few thousand dollars more to repair had that been the scenario!

But thank God, literally, it was not.

And thank God it didn’t happen on Tuesday when I was over 40 miles away from home in the middle of the Los Angeles / Culver City area where I don’t know my way around, or coming back from there on I-405 around midnight.

Thank God it didn’t happen while I was on one of the mountain back roads en route to the beach where I don’t get cell phone signal and few cars travel there.

Thank God my engine didn’t actually start on fire in the middle of the freeway but was just steaming radiator fluid!  (Hence the sweet “maple syrup” smell which caught my attention.)

Thank God I was able to get across five lanes of traffic just in time to reach the exit to my favorite mechanic’s!

And thank God both me and my Miata are OK.

It’s a good reminder of why I chose to put “Thnks G” on my license plate… Because I DO believe in miracles!

Thank you, God!   And thanks in advance for the prosperity and abundance to afford the repairs!  J  I know You are that good!

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

Rev. Jeanette

PROTECTING ME FROM ME

I’ve never been much of a hat person.

There are two reasons for this.  First is my history.  I grew up during the free-wheeling, devil may care, we-love-the-feeling-of-the-wind-in-our-long-flowing-hair 1960s and 1970s.  Our fathers wore hats.  So did cowboys, detectives and Mouseketeers.  The only really cool people who wore hats were baseball players.  But they only wore their hats while they were playing baseball.  They were utilitarian.  And I wasn’t interested in anything utilitarian.  That was way too “establishment” for me.

The second reason is . . . well, my head.  It’s huge.  And my face is kind of round.  Picture one of those yellow smiley faces.  Now put a hat on it.  Sorta dorky, huh?

I rest my case.

So when my wife, Anita, suggested that I wear a hat to the football game last Saturday, I pretty much shrugged it off.

“I don’t think I’ll need one,” I said.

“It’s going to be hot, and you’ll be sitting in the sun all afternoon,” she said.

“I’ll be fine,” I said.  And out the door I went with my teenage son, Jon.

When we got to the stadium Jon decided that HE needed a hat.  He picked out a great one, and urged me to do the same.

“I’ll be fine,” I said.

“Well, at least get some sun block,” he said, pressing a small tube into my hand.

I put the sun block back on the shelf.  “I’ll be fine,” I said.

You already know what’s coming, don’t you?

We had a great time at the game – our team won!  We had terrific seats in the east bleachers – facing the afternoon sun.  All told we sat there, broiling in 95 degree temperatures, for more than four hours.

I was feeling exhilarated – albeit a little over-baked – as we made our way back to the car.  We talked about the game and decided our team would do well against next week’s nationally ranked opponent.  By the time we fought through the post-game traffic and pulled into our driveway we had strategized an undefeated season and a national championship.

Unfortunately, my face was on fire.  And my arms.  My head ached, I was sore all over, the room was spinning and my stomach was churning.

Other than that, I was fine.

“You look fried,” Anita said as she reached for the pain-killing antiseptic spray.

“Maybe a little,” I moaned as I collapsed into the first chair that spun past me.

“I tried to get him to wear some sun block,” Jon said.  “I really tried.”

“I know,” Anita said as she vigorously sprayed my arms and face.  “Sometimes you just can’t save him from himself.”

I didn’t care for the way they were speaking about me as if I wasn’t there.  But when I tried to object, my mouth wouldn’t move.  I think it was welded shut.  So I just sat there while my wife tenderly ministered to me.  To her credit, she never said “I told you so.”  But she was thinking it.  I could tell by the bemused little smile on her face.  She was thinking it.  Big time.

And with good reason.  People who love me tried to protect me.  But I refused to be protected.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of us who do that.  Despite warnings and objections from important people in our lives we don’t eat right.  We don’t get enough exercise.  We don’t wear a seat belt when we drive.  We don’t get enough sleep.  We think we’re fine.  We’ve got everything under control.  Then one day we get burned – sometimes literally.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m going to start paying more attention to those who are trying to warn me about . . . well . . . me.  I can’t promise that I’ll always do what they tell me to do.  But I’ll at least listen.

And I’ll wear that hat.
