For those of you who still want to help the folks in Bangladesh but haven’t gotten to it yet, here are a few of the ways you can participate:

1.    Pray for the people of Bangladesh and for the World Vision crews and other rescue workers trying to help the millions of people affected.

2.    Make a monetary donation for emergency relief.  You can do so right now with the following link:  www.worldvision.org/CycloneAid

3.   Sponsor a child for just $30 per month using the link below... ($30 is the equivalent of going out to eat or to the movies just once for most folks.  It goes a lot further than that through World Vision!)

With the holidays approaching, it can get real crazy.  We all want to shop for those perfect gifts and get them wrapped up “just so” to make the recipient feel special.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent many a day and night in years gone by racking my brain on how to make the holidays into those “Hallmark” moments and they just never seem to turn out quite the way I planned!  So I’ve learned to go with the flow and life has gotten much more enjoyable this time of year.

This afternoon I was listening to a local radio station playing Christmas songs and one of my all time favorites came on…Bing Crosby singing “Do You Hear What I Hear?”  I think it’s so memorable because the first time I recall hearing it was when I lived in an upstairs duplex with my Mom and Dad, and Grandma and Grandpa lived downstairs.  I loved watching the old Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movies.  And I loved spending time with Grandma and Grandpa, even if it was simply sitting on the couch watching TV with them.  Just to be close felt really good.

This particular evening was either right before or right after Christmas.  I can still see Grandma and Grandpa’s silver Christmas tree decorated with bright red ornaments and lights in front of the living room window.  Icicles hung off the gutters like gigantic stalactites and the familiar scent of the old furnace warmed the house as we sat on the “davenport” together. The TV show we had planned on watching was canceled.  In its place was a memorial to Bing Crosby who had just passed away.

Grandma and Grandpa both talked about what a good fellow he was as the TV played snippets from our favorite movies that featured Bing Crosby.  They also showed various interviews with him and about him featuring those who knew Bing best.  The tribute closed with a montage set to the song “Do You Hear What I Hear?”  It moved me to tears.

I was very sad.  Yet despite my sadness, I was also very happy.  I was happy that I was safe with Grandma and Grandpa and that I knew they would “always” be there for me.  I was happy because everywhere I looked, their home was both beautiful and comfortable.  And I knew Mom and Dad were just upstairs.  I was happy to have my sister to play with and happy that Mom let us help decorate upstairs with our very own drawings.  Although my heart hurt at the thought of Bing Crosby dying, it was a bitter sweet feeling because I was truly comforted and nurtured right where I was.  And that was a very good feeling.

Grandma and Grandpa have both made their soul graduation since then but those memories have stayed with me for over thirty years.

To be honest, I can’t recall most of the Christmas presents I’ve received throughout my life – or have given to others, even though I know they were all special.

The most precious gift of all has been feeling loved… and being safe and secure in that love.

This year, as you’re racking your brain (and possibly wallet) for that truly special gift, perhaps take a minute to pause.  Think about ways you can make those you’re buying for feel loved by your actions, words, attitude and energy.  I guarantee it’s those feelings of being loved, safe and secure that will stay with your loved ones more than any gift you can buy them.

That’s not to say we should skip the gifts… just maybe put a little less into a present to wrap and a little more into this present moment.  Especially a little more love, a little more laughter, a little more of YOU.

May God bless you and yours this holiday season

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

Rev. Jeanette

DENZEL WASHINGTON DOES GOOD – Thanks to Toni

There have been many claims of Denzel Washington’s generous gifts to the Fisher Houses.  Snopes.com clarifies the good deed as follows:

On December 17th, 2004, Denzel  Washington  and  his family visited the  troops at   Brook   Army Medical Center ,  in  San  Antonio ,   Texas  (BAMC). This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims. There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses.

The Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for approximately $10 per night while their soldier is staying in the Hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, he told the soldiers there how much he respected their service and was given a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. Mr. Washington stated that he would like to commit his support to the facility and sent a sizeable check several months later.

8.      Wednesday WORD — by Diane, The California Dreamer

IF NOT FOR YOU

To wrap up this month with gratitude, I wanted to share a poem that recently was read at church.  It really resonated with me and I wanted to tell all the people in my life this important message.

Some of you are actively in my life, some are friends that I don't keep in contact with any longer, some are from SFPNN only, and others are people I have not conversed with.

To all of you  -- thank you for being in my life.

"If Not for You"
by Rev. Bob Luckin

If not for you, there would be a place of emptiness in the heart of God.

If not for you, all the good you have done would still need doing.

If not for you, the spark of your ideas would not have ignited a fire in others.

If not for you, the key role you have played in life's drama would remain unfilled.

If not for you, at least one person would not have awakened to their dreams.

If not for you, your triumphs could not be examples to inspire others.

If not for you, someone who needed love would not have received it.

If not for you, a life would have been shortened, or never have existed.

If not for you, the song of life would have missed a beat.

If not for you, your gifts would remain un-given.

If not for you, another might have suffered in your place.

If not for you, someone would have no path to follow.

If not for you, there would be one less smile, one less laugh, and one less hug.

If not for you, there would be less mystery.

If not for you, an animal might be homeless, and a garden left unplanted.

If not for you, something would be missing.

YOU have always made a difference.

Who you are always made a difference.

Who you are is important every day.

You are the face, the heart, and the soul of God.
