Howdy Folks and Good Day!

Thanks to everyone who sent their condolences for the Green Bay Packers’ loss on Sunday.

I’d like to share a little insight about Wisconsin for folks outside of the state.  It’s actually a pretty good place to grow up.  People are very loyal, and friends and family are important.  However, Wisconsin is not known for its affluence; with much of the commerce based on industry and agriculture, it can be difficult to make a living there. Even though the technology, business and service industries are expanding, a lot of folks end up moving out of state with hopes and dreams of getting ahead elsewhere.

Wisconsin isn’t known for much to those outside of the Midwest… except cows, cheese, psychos, and…

The Green Bay Packers.

The Packers give folks something to cheer for, someone to root for, and something to be proud of!  And unlike many professional teams which are owned by wealthy individuals, The Packers are actually owned by the CITY of Green Bay.  Season tickets are hard to come by – it’s not uncommon for people to will them to their family members because the waiting list can be up to 25 years long!

When The Packers do well, the state of Wisconsin does well!

Which is why what I’m about to say may actually surprise you…

If the Packers had to lose, I’m really glad the Giants won the way they did!

Sunday’s game was important; it determined which team went to the Super Bowl.  It was held in Green Bay at the sold-out historic Lambeau Field.  And the Packers’ Hall of Fame 1960’s quarterback Bart Starr was there as an honorary captain.  The game was expected to go to the Packers who had gone so far to prepare for it they even practiced with frozen footballs!

But the Giants gave them a run for the money.  And by the fourth quarter the game was tied 20 to 20.  The pressure was on.  So was the cold, it was the second coldest game in NFL Championship history with a wind chill of TWENTY-FOUR DEGREES BELOW ZERO!  (For those of you who haven’t experienced this kind of weather, it feels like someone has knocked the wind out of you on every in-breath.  Your nostril hairs and eye-lashes freeze.  Men’s mustaches get icicles.  It’s beyond cold!)

The Giants, with a fourth down, and less than seven minutes in the game to go, called in Lawrence Tynes to kick a 43 yard field goal for the win.  He missed.

As Tynes headed back to the sidelines with obvious disappointment all over his face, the Giants’ coach laid into him… Bad.  It made an already uncomfortable and disheartening moment for the Giants’ field goal kicker almost unbearable.

During the last two minutes of the game, Tynes was called in again to attempt the tie-breaking field goal.  But with a poor snap to the tee, Tynes miss the 36 yard field goal, leaving the game tied for a second time and the weight of their potential loss and missed chance at the Super Bowl riding on his shoulders.

Still tied, with the Giants’ coach red in the face – both from probable frost-bite and anger at their field goal kicker – the game went into over time.

Once again, with the Green Bay fans cheering, the Giants’ coach yelling, and the -24Fº wind chill blowing, Lawrence Tynes was called in to kick the field goal.  The game announcers all but assured viewers he would miss again.

The ball was snapped, placed on the tee, and Lawrence Tynes kicked the winning field goal, sending the Giants to the Super Bowl! And a lot of shivering Packers fans home, hopeful next season will be The One.

As much as I’m a dedicated Packers fan and would have loved for them to win, I’m glad that Lawrence Tynes was able to redeem himself and make the winning kick for the Giants.  (Hopefully his coach will take a few lessons from the Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy on how to treat your team’s players!)

Redemption is such an important gift.

We’ve all made poor choices, have had errors of judgment, made mistakes big and small, and have just plain messed up in life!

Some of those errors are easy to fix.  With computers we can just hit the “undo” or “delete” buttons.   Often a simple, “I’m sorry” will do the trick when it comes to redeeming ourselves with people.  But there are things in life which require a lot more effort and may be unfixable.

In every case, we can ask for the blessings of redemption, grace, and forgiveness.  Even if we can’t fix it and make it better, we can put our best foot forward, move from our heart, and do what we can to make the best of the situation as is possible.

Most of us will never have to worry about making the winning field goal, but we do have to win and maintain the trust of those we care about.  We must run with the ball when it comes to delivering what we promise.  We need to be team players with our family, friends, and co-workers.  We also need to lead when the time is right.

However, when it comes to keeping score, we’re better off leaving that to sports casters.

We’ve heard it a million times before but there really are situations when we have to choose between being right, or being peaceful; being right or being loving; being right or being forgiving.  As much as we hope for redemption for ourselves, we must be willing to allow others the same gift.*

(*This doesn’t mean we let others disrespect us or repeatedly hurt us, but we do learn to forgive the person, if not necessarily the action.)

Can you remember a time in your life when you were granted a chance to redeem yourself?  Were you able experience the feeling of grace and relief that washed over you when you did?   Can you recall the positive impact it had on you and others around you?

Let’s all be grateful for the gift of redemption.  Even when it means the Giants are going to the Super Bowl instead of the Packers.  (Go Tynes!  You did good, son!)

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

Rev. Jeanette

7.      Tuesday Trivia

Did You Know…?

Studies have shown that waist circumference, not overall weight, is the most important indicator of mortality related to being overweight…

For optimal health, the ideal waist size for women is 32 ½ inches; for men, the ideal is 35 inches.  [Measure the circumference of your waist at the point of your belly button.]

GRACE

I received some cosmetic gifts called “Grace” this holiday season. In fact, above the word “Grace” was the word “Amazing” in small print.

Surely everyone has heard the song "Amazing Grace" at one time or another in their lifetime.  Some of the melody and words went around my head and I found myself humming the song for a long time.

Then I stopped and thought about the word "Grace" as I showered and then put on the lotion called Grace. What does grace really mean?

“Grace: n,” it said in the dictionary. “Beauty, charm, loveliness, attractiveness, appeal, good form, fluidity, symmetry, finesse, ease, ‘poetry in motion,’ form, agility, dexterity, poise, refinement, having manners, charm, cultivation, etiquette.”

Then it said, “Mercy, forgiveness, leniency, compassion, good will, clemency, prayer benediction, thanksgiving, request for a blessing, God's favor, love, virtue, divine influence, holiness...”

And my favorite description of grace came from William Hazlitt:

"The outward expression of the inward harmony of the soul"

I pray that with each new day of this coming year you find yourself walking in grace — God's grace; His love, and divine influence — as you express the inward harmony of your soul.
