Howdy Folks and Good Day!

Today I’d like to encourage you to make note of life’s special moments.

We often take our memories and our lives for granted.  (At least until something happens which prevents us from doing so.)

As someone who has experienced memory loss as a result of blood toxicity due to a misdiagnosis and a subsequent prescription, I cherish the moments – and memories – I create.  I also have many older friends who either suffer from what doctors deem “normal” memory loss or Alzheimer’s.  Some days the simplest memories, such as someone’s name, are a greatly cherished gift.

Our brains are pretty incredible when it comes to memory storage.  But unlike computers, we don’t get to change out the hard-drive, upgrade the RAM, or add extra disk space.  What we have is what we’ve got.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Because what we’ve got is amazing…

Language is just one small portion of what our brains can do.  Think of all the words you have in your current vocabulary!  If it doesn’t seem like much, try visiting a website written in a language you’re unfamiliar with and see how many words from that language are NOT in your vocabulary.  It will give you a better idea of just how much you do know in your familiar language.

As incredible as our brains are, creating memories isn’t just a physical or chemical function of our brain. It’s something we do with our entire body, mind and soul.

We experience the world around us through all of our body’s senses… touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. Can you recall the scent of a fresh snowfall or the sweetness of moist pavement when a light rain first begins?  Do you remember what warm rays of sunlight feel like as they stream into your eyes and touch your skin?  Or the taste of a freshly picked strawberry dipped in chocolate?  What about the sound of dried leaves rustling beneath your feet as you walk on the sidewalk on an autumn day?  Were you able to visualize all of these?

We especially remember experiences that are intense; that intensity can be due to joy, peace, or other emotions.  But the emotions tied to our physical sensations help create a photograph in our mind.

So does our soul’s ability to connect with us.  When we feel the energy of our Spirit pouring into us, even the most minute moments can feel intense and heighten our senses.  If we’re in touch with our soul, we are often very aware of our surroundings and can more easily create memories.  We appreciate life more and have a reverence which allows us to cherish these moments.

Today, let your Spirit pour through.  Allow yourself to revel in your senses and make photographic imprints in your mind of the special moments.

For the record, special doesn’t have to be big, fancy, or impressive.  It can be your friend’s smile.  Or the laughter of a child.  A bird singing, cat meowing, or dog barking.  It can be the sound of wind blowing against your ears.  Or the various shades of white and gray in winter storm clouds.  Maybe it’s simply feeling love in your heart.

Create special moments, special memories, today and every day.  And cherish each precious minute of your life.  It truly is a gift.

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

Rev. Jeanette

The kind of day we make it!

A little pro-active positive programming can go a long way in creating our heart’s desires.  All of our thoughts have energy.  Energy attracts like energy.  Think about your desires for today. What would you like to experience in the next 24 hours?   Allow yourself to see it manifesting in your mind’s eye and feel it happening in your body so the energy of your thoughts and emotions draws it to you. Affirm it on the lines below!

Today, I desire and experience…

My Mother's Friend Remembers
and Her Memories Bring Me Happiness

Tonight I was on the telephone with my mom's best friend, growing up, Betty Hill.  They walked to school together for many years.  In fact, Betty told me that she couldn't wait to meet up with my mom because my mom entertained her the whole way to school with descriptions of the fascinating dreams she had the night before.  Betty didn't remember her dreams so my mother's became her dream world also.  No day was dull as long as Bernice had a good dream!

And then there was my mother's wedding.  It was held in Brookline at a wonderful old home, complete with a winding staircase and lots of fireplaces.  My mother was such a beautiful bride, with coal black hair, blue eyes and a beautiful white gown with exquisite hand made lace.  Betty was the maid of honor and stood at the bottom of the long staircase as my mom came down the stairs.  It was wonderful.

The home belonged to the caterer and the ceremony was followed by a delicious meal.  My father. Harry Becker, looked so handsome-tall and elegant in his white suit.

What a moment in time.  I have pictures from their wedding, but Betty helped me to have the memories!

Thank you, Betty!

STRIKING BACK AGAINST HOLLYWOOD’S SKEWED LENS

Evidently, I’m on strike.

Who knew?

I must have missed the memo. But I’m reading about it in all the newspapers and on all the Web sites: writers are on strike, and the world as we know it has come to a grinding halt, all for the want of words.

Or not.

OK, so my union isn’t really the one on strike.  Let me rephrase that: if I belonged to a writers’ union – which I don’t – mine wouldn’t be the one on strike.  The writers on strike write for TV and film.  From what I hear, they want a bigger piece of the entertainment pie.  And I can understand that. That’s a pretty good-sized piece of pastry – more than enough to share generously, don’t you think?  As an ink-stained wretch without a union, I’d love to have any piece of the entertainment pie.

Heck, I’d settle for a hunk of the entertainment Twinkie.  Whatever.  I’m easy.

The surprising thing here is, nobody knew they actually had writers for television any more.  I mean, it’s all sports and reality shows, isn’t it?  And the whole point of reality shows is that you DON’T write them – isn’t it?  Gone are the days of Paddy Chayefsky, Rod Serling, Steven Bochco, James Burrows, the Charles brothers and Aaron Sorkin. Instead we have someone named Melissa on MTV’s “Real World” solemnly intoning things like: “He’s got Gucci shoes on, you know.  I’m sitting here in Target jeans, it’s just not gonna work out.”

You can’t write stuff like that.

Thank heavens.

Hollywood is all abuzz about the strike . . . well, that and . . . you know . . . Britney.  Late night talk show hosts are trying to figure out how to be funny without joke writers.  TV series are on indefinite hiatus, and viewers are being fed a steady diet of reruns. They’re even canceling some of the award shows – seems the stars can’t say “and the winner is” without someone to put it down on cue cards for them.  Plus, nobody wants to cross the union picket lines.  In fact, I’m probably violating some cardinal rule of brotherhood and solidarity just by sitting in front of this word processor and making a few verbs and nouns agree.

Uh . . . they did agree, didn’t they?

All of which means the “vast wasteland” of television is a little vaster these days (yes, I know – “vaster” isn’t exactly a word; there’s a writers’ strike on, for Pete’s sake!  Words everywhere are spinning out of control!).  What better time to put down the remote control, step away from the ol’ Motorola and find something else to do? There are children to talk to, spouses to re-connect with, exercise programs to launch and volunteer service projects in which to participate.  Write to an old friend.  Make brownies for your neighbors.  Sort those boxes of old photos you’ve been meaning to organize.  Read a book.  WRITE a book (but be careful on this one – there may be union implications).

There’s a ton of stuff to do, stuff you’ve set aside until the day you had some free time.  And now, thanks to the writers’ strike, time is what you have.  Think of it as a gift from Lalaland to you: a gift of time.  A gift of family.  A gift of friendship.  A gift of community.  You’ll be surprised at how refreshingly pleasant life can be when you’re looking at it through your own eyes rather than the skewed lens of Hollywood perception.

And who knows?  When “Desperate Housewives” finally does return with new episodes, maybe you won’t be quite so . . . desperate.

And you’ll be ready to strike back.
