Howdy Folks and Good Day!

We’re almost to the end of January, nearly a full month into 2008.  How are your new year’s resolutions and goals coming?  Are you off to a good start?  Have you given up?  Are you making good progress?

I think I’m with a lot of folks when I looked around and realized I wasn’t quite as far as I had hoped for!

I did a progress evaluation about two weeks ago.  I’m very fortunate to work from home and have control of my schedule.  I’ve got the world’s shortest commute!  And I don’t have the blessing human children to distract me. Nor do I watch a lot of TV. Yet I was working non-stop from the time I got up in the morning, between 6-7am, until the time I went to bed around midnight.   So why wasn’t I getting things done?!

I’m sure many of you (especially those with more challenging schedules than mine) have asked the same thing.  After careful contemplation I wondered if my routine was working for me or against me and set out to do some self observation.

I have to admit I was a bit surprised – although not entirely.

It turns out much of my schedule was actually not just routine, but habit!  Instead of doing things because I really wanted to or chose to, I did them because I felt I “should” or was “driven” to because that’s what I always do.

With that said, I highly recommend doing a quick check-in with yourself by paying attention to your schedule, and how you structure (or don’t structure) your day. See if you are making conscious choices or simply going on auto-pilot, habitual routine, or ‘just because.”

Once I realized which parts of my routine or habitual schedule weren’t working for me, I was able to make conscious changes.  You can too!

For instance, I used to check e-mail while eating my breakfast.  I got into that routine because I’d sit down at my desk with my breakfast to enjoy the morning sun and an inspiring view of the mountain.  As long as I was at my desk, I’d turn on the computer and check e-mail. Trying to be effective, I’d reply to all the e-mail as they came in.  But as soon as I would send out those replies, more e-mail would come in and before I knew it, the morning had slipped away.  So had my opportunity to exercise, journal, and take a luxurious bath.  (I get most of my inspiration soaking in the tub and it also helps alleviate sore muscles so daily baths – as opposed to quick showers – are very important to me.)

Now instead of eating breakfast at my desk and checking e-mail, I do yoga or Pilates first thing.  If my blood sugar is low and I have to eat, I take my breakfast into the living room, where my yoga matt and an exercise video await me.  I can still enjoy the sunshine, but I don’t turn on my computer!  After my workout and breakfast, I go upstairs to journal and soak.  Then I either fix lunch or read.  Finally, I check e-mail.  I do one batch of replies and then turn off my computer until much later in the afternoon.

Another thing I’d noticed was that I had scheduled my school studies for the evening, after working on SFPNN.  By that time my eyes were fatigued and the small Times New Roman typeface used for my course-work would literally put me to sleep!  So I began doing my school studies in the early afternoon.  I’ve gotten more done in two weeks than the last two months!

Truth be told, I feel like I’m working less and accomplishing more!  Working with my body’s natural rhythms and finding the areas I was sabotaging myself in made a tremendous difference.

I invite you to study your schedule for at least a week.  Maybe two.  See where you spend the most time.  Keep an eye out for those things you think will only take a few minutes (such as checking e-mail) but turn into schedule-busters!  Also watch for areas that feel the least productive.  Is there anything you can do to make them more effective and efficient?  Note whether you are working with your body’s natural rhythms or against them.  What changes can you make so your body is working with you?

Folks, we all deserve to live the life of our dreams, no matter how large or small they may be.  Yet so often our habits, distractions, and other things pull us away from what we really want.  Sometimes it’s just a matter of saying no.  Other times we need to make some changes.  Those changes might be as simple as not checking e-mail before 11am or they might be a little more complex.  The point is to set ourselves up to flow with the rhythm of our desired lives, to succeed in way that nourishes and supports us.

I invite you to do some self-research and begin scheduling your success today!

With Peace, Love, Happiness, Health, and Prosperity…

Rev. Jeanette

THE BROKEN PROMISE
By Ellie Braun-Haley

A number of years ago I worked for a college and taught for the college two days of each week in the city and for two days of the week I was on the road traveling for this same college taking my courses out into some of the towns in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Often I picked up hitchhikers. This practice caused a lot of concern for my family and to ease their worries I had to promise I would cease. This is the story of what happened one night in Saskatchewan.

The Broken Promise

She was returning from teaching out in a small community. It was only 9:30 in the evening but in November it gets dark early and it was definitely a black and moonless night. The car heater was on and she was grateful to be driving a dependable car. A blizzard was blowing in and this would not be the time to have car trouble, not on these roads! A teacher for the nearest city college, she'd been traveling the same route for over a year and there was seldom traffic on the little secondary highway.

She remembered back to when she had first started teaching out in the small communities. In those days she was constantly picking up hitchhikers. She smiled as she remembered the one young 16-year-old fellow she picked up one day. He kept saying, “Haven't we met somewhere?” They laughed long and hard when they remembered that she had given him a ride a month previously on the same road. She thought back to the day when she was on the northern route and had given a ride to a man. He was seated before she realized he was drunk and a talker. He talked and talked and made little sense. Finally with great relief she saw another hiker and picked up that one to keep the first company.

Her family became greatly concerned about her welfare over the hitchhikers but she continued the practice until the day her sister talked to her. Her sister's friend had been shot in the head by a hitchhiker, all because the girl stopped out of mercy to help a man in a storm.

The storm that night brought the memories. They'd gone to school with this girl. She was gentle and thoughtful. To die because of an act of goodness did not make sense. That was when the family heard the promise. 'No more hitchhikers, I promise!'

“Well, I won't see a hitchhiker on this road,” she thought. “It is unlikely I'll see a car!”

She came out of a slight curve and slowed because a car was parked on the road ahead. “These little highways just don't have any shoulders,” she thought. Then she saw the man waving. He was in trouble and she slowed more. He looked like he was in trouble but what if he wasn't? A screwdriver on the floor was the only protection she had.

In a flash she remembered the promise. She remembered the old school friend, dead because of a hitchhiker. She knew this road well though and the chances of another car coming along to help were stacked well against this lone motorist.

She pulled over and rolled down the window. She had pulled ahead of the stranded car. Now as he ran toward the car in the dark she shook with fear and yet knew if he was truly in need she could not leave him here in this storm.

The stranger explained that his car was dead. She knew she had to break the promise and hoped she would live to see her children that night. She told him to get in. They drove for an hour into the next city and she took him to a telephone booth. She waited until he had made a call. When he reported back to her that a family member would soon be there for him, she wished him well and left.

Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. It felt as though she had been holding her breath for an hour. “I hope they'll understand why I had to break my promise. I think I've been watched over this night!”

Did You Know…?

Eating a handful of nuts has been shown to help you stay full, while skipping meals can be detrimental because your body will go into a fat-storing, starvation mode when it doesn’t have enough calories.

A Sense of Awe

Many of you know I live at the Jersey shore in a house overlooking the water.  Every morning I wake up facing and looking at the magnificent colors of the sunrise.

Sometimes it is so beautiful that I run and get a camera to capture the moment so I can look at it again on a dreary, gloomy day.

Many people are in awe of sunsets. I am too. But, I am here to tell you the colors of the sun rising in the fall and in the winter are just as vibrant and beautiful as any sunset. In fact, people I have sent photos to thought they were photos of the sun setting.

I wonder how many people enjoy a sense of awe in their lives?

I look around me everyday and see so many people who hurry through their day, never really seeing anything around them.  What joys they are missing!

I thank God for these blessings and His wonderful daily surprises. I thank Him for being able to see His artistry in full splendid colors. It puts a smile on my face all day long.

The kids of today use the word "awesome" to describe something good that they see or receive. I reserve the word "Awesome" for one thing…

God is awesome!

He is impressive, overwhelming, astonishing, amazing, breathtakingly wonderful!

Yes! I am in awe of Him and the blessings I receive on a daily basis.
