Tickles
By Ellie Braun-Haley

Sometimes we forget to laugh, which is why tickles had to be invented.

This happened many, many years ago in a place far away, in a land I have never been to, but I heard an old man tell my great grandfather all about this place. People could no longer communicate with one another and misunderstandings were busy erupting everywhere.

There lived at this time in the world, brilliant little bugs. They were smarter than the smartest dogs of today, and they were very special. They cared about the land and the flowers and they especially watched over the people.

Now one little bug, was called Tickles. When Tickles saw the horrible mess in the land, where people weren't talking to one another, he thought he could help with the problem. Tickles walked up to people to talk to them about his great ideas. But people had stopped listening and besides Tickles was small so not only did the people not hear him, but they couldn't even see him!

Tickles did not give up easily. He tried to talk to the shorter people. Nope, same problem. So tickles tried to talk to the children. Nope, even the children had stopped listening to anything or anyone. Well Tickles decided this would take drastic measures.

Now the very special bugs were not supposed to walk on people, as that simply was not respectful.  Tickles knew this rule, but he decided when things get tough, sometimes one must make new rules.

Tickles found an old man sitting all alone and he approached. He knew this was prohibited and a radical move but someone had to change the bad state of affairs. Tickles had decided to actually walk on the man to get close to his ears whereby the gentleman might hear what Tickles had to tell him. So up the legs of the man walked Tickles.

Now Tickles always had a very light step and as he walked along his feet caused funny sensations for the man. The man started to grin.  As Tickles walked further the man began chuckling and then it happened. The man was gulping and laughing out loud. He laughed so much he soon forgot all the things he was unhappy about. He laughed so hard he forgot to be mad at the baker man.

The baker man heard the laughter and ran out of his shop to see what was going on.  Tickles ran down the leg of the old man and up the leg of the baker man, which of course, soon had the baker man laughing.

The two men laughed so hard that people near by crowded around to see what was happening. With each person who happened along, Tickles ran up the their leg to explain that he had somehow caused all the laughter. And of course, each time Tickles ran up a leg, more laughter exploded amongst the crowd.

Soon the baker and the old man were hugging each other and talking. The old man couldn’t even remember what he was angry about. The two men sat together and watched as more and more townspeople joined the crowd and more and more townspeople giggled and snickered and some seemed almost in hysterics with their laughter.

As each person in the huge crowd stopped laughing they were amazed to realize how very wonderful this outburst felt. Someone noticed Tickles and by watching what Tickles was doing they all soon realized it was Tickles causing the funny feelings. It was Tickles who was bringing about this great Laughter Session.

Tickles soon understood he didn’t have to tell the people anything. He merely had to get them laughing and with the merriment people could find their way back to communicating. And as the people watched Tickles they decided if they couldn’t get laughter any other way, they would practice tickling on their children until they were expert ticklers, just like Tickles.

Of course this all happened a very long time ago, but even today people still understand that smiles and laughter can often help in our communications with one another.
