A Path To
Freedom Rebecca
Chapter 2
CAPTAIN
Some of my comrades were badly injured, too gruesome to describe. Cries of fear
issued from their mouths. Their clothing was torn. Many of them weren't even in uniform. They must have been taken by surprise. I knew that is what I would see before I even
opened my eyes.
So I moved forward with my eyes still clamped shut. My fears were confirmed as I heard yelps and pleas from my old pal, John Jacob Jingle Himerschmidt. "Please, God, get him off me!”
I slowly opened my eyes. In front of me stood Captain T.J. Porter. Next to me stood Jingle Himershmidt. Neither of them were really injured – except for Jingle Himerschmidt… “You mindless dim wit!" he yelled in pain. John Jacob’s hand was pinned underneath my big black boots, and when I lifted my foot I saw his hand turning an angry shade of purple.
"Captain, Captain!" I exclaimed. “You’re alive!”
Captain rolled his eyes and inhaled a long deep breath. "Solider, where have you been? We were attacked five hours ago!" Captain T.J. Porter said angrily in his deep, rough, voice.
"No one woke me up, Captain Porter." I answered.
"No one was woken up, boy! They woke up because of the bombs. I bet you slept through all of it," he grunted.
"Sorry, Captain," I said.
"You better get your butt in
gear and go help the other soldiers!" shouted the Captain.
"Yessss, sir!"
I don't blame the Captain for yelling, he's not such a bad guy, he just has a lot of excess stress in his
life. Captain T.J. is a very short man with no hair on his
head. He sometimes wears a curly
wig. Some of his recruits say he lost
his hair at war, others say he never had any.
Whenever people bring up this topic his chubby face turns red and he starts
yelling like a lunatic.
But I’m Devin Redwood, and I stand two feet taller than the Captain and have lots of red hair. My comrades sometimes tease me, asking, "Why don't you share some of your hair with Captain Baldy?" They quickly shut up about it as soon as they get sight of Captain T.J. Porter’s face. Unlike the Captain, I am also very skinny and unfortunately can be very clumsy at times.
