Chapter 3

oops!

I ran to the equipment, grabbed a gun, a few bombs, and a rocket thingy. I ran back to the rock I was behind before and loaded my gun.  I aimed the gun towards the sky where an object was hovering above us.  I closed my eyes tight and fired.  Slowly I opened my eyes. I saw a shadow of something falling from the sky. It grew larger and larger. Oh, God, it was going to hit the Captain!

I tried to scream to warn the Captain but it was too late!  The object landed with a sickening thud, the weight of it instantly knocking the Captain off his feet.  It was the most gruesome sight I had ever seen.  A dead Turkey Vulture with its lifeless head dangling wildly had landed on the Captain’s head. The vulture was a spitting image of Captain T.J. Porter, fat and bald with a sharp beak!  Captain T.J.’s face turned blood red.  I leapt back to the safety of my rock before he could see me. I got ready to shoot again, my hands trembling, praying I wouldn't do that again.

I aimed again, concentrating my hardest and reminding myself to keep my eyes open. Once again the whistling of a bomb dropping from the sky caught my attention. I accidentally pulled the trigger of my gun and hit the falling bomb!  The bomb exploded in the air making sparks of fire go everywhere.  But it didn't make as big of an explosion as it would have if it had hit the ground.

"Who just did that?!" shouted the captain.

I slowly came out from behind the boulder where I was hiding and said in my calmest voice, "I did, sir."

"Good work solider.  Keep it up!" exclaimed the Captain.  “The rest of you men, follow suit.  Try to hit those bombs before they reach the ground.”

I smiled and went back behind the rock, waiting for another bomb to fall.

Ten minutes later they dropped two bombs instead of one! But I hit them both before they hit the ground.  I guess they found out what we were doing, because the next time they dropped five more bombs, making it hard to shoot at. One almost hit the ground.  I missed it but Captain Porter hit it just in time.

I was getting worried and started thinking about my family back home.  I wonder if they are thinking about me as I sit here trying to save my country from these invaders.

It was around seven-o-clock when the bombs stopped dropping. Every thing went silent.  We waited in position all night.

That was the first day of the war.
