Chapter 4

far from over

I woke up to find one of my comrades fallen in the dirt.  I nudged him but he didn’t move.  Fearing the worst, I tried to turn his body over so I could see who it was.  I screamed for help, hoping someone would come over to see what the commotion was.  But no one came.  Recognizing his face, I screamed even louder.  No, it couldn’t be!

I jumped up, sick to my stomach, feeling like I was about to pass out.  Lost in terror, I tripped over my comrade’s lifeless body.

It was John Jacob Jingglehimersmith.  He had asked me to be his best man at his wedding after the war.  What am I going to do?  I can't bear to tell his fiancé he is dead. It will break her heart.  Looking at John Jacob one last time, I realize how much I really don't want to be here.  I want to be home with my ma and pa.

But I am determined to help my country through this tragic time.  So I picked up my riffle, and started to search for the others.  What I found wasn't pretty.  There were ten other fallen people whom I couldn't recognize because of their bad condition.

Thinking the enemy had gone to another location, I started to walk away.  Out of nowhere came the words, "Don't move or I'll shoot."

It took a while for me to recognize the voice.  It came from Diana Matt Kent.  She was also a recruit and probably thought I was one of the enemies.

Diana Kent is related to Captain T.J. Porter because her aunt married him.  Diana is taller than Captain T.J. and very protective of her family.  She is tan with short black hair and she is 17 years old just like me, with big dreams to travel the world.

"Drop your gun and turn around slowly," she ordered.

I did what I was told and put down my gun, revealing my face to her.

"Tell me your name," Diana commanded.

"Devin Redwood.  I'm on your side," I told her.

"Devin, huh? Well prove it!” she screamed.

"Well, Diana, I have my dog tag with me. Here."  I threw my I.D. tag towards her and she caught it.  She examined it carefully, then lowered her gun.

"All right I believe you," Diana replied.  "So do you know where every one went?" she asked.

"No, but I'm guessing they were forced out because no one else here is alive.”

"I guess we better go look for them," Diana commanded.

"O. K." I said and picked up my gun. Diana and I then went looking for any other survivors.
