Chapter 8

OVER THE HILLS OF SAND

"We don't have to hot wire anything because the keys are already in the ignition," Diana told us.

"Well, I didn't know that," said Jonathan dimwittedly.

"Get in the car boys, before someone finds us!" exclaimed Diana, completely ignoring Jonathan.

Me and Jonathan climbed in the back seat as Diana climbed in front behind the steering wheel.  We didn't even have a chance to put on our seat belt and the car was already lurching forward, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour!  Suddenly we heard gunshots and yells of mad enemy forces.

Diana drove up a large sanded hill.  As we reached the top, the car tires began to spin and the car sunk deeper and deeper into the sand.  Diana frantically rocked the car forward and backward until it finally worked its way out and it jerked itself over the hill.    As we drove, we came across many skeletons that had been eaten by scavengers like vultures and coyotes.  I was drenched in sweat as the blazing sun shone onto my uniform.  It was so hot we encountered a bunch of cacti that were actually dying from the heat.

I thought about home and the nice weather that never ever got to this temperature.  My mouth watered as I thought about ice cream and soda, and the lemonade my mother made for me during the summer.  Mmmm… lemonade…”  I thought to my self.

" I'm thirsty," Jonathan wined.

"Look under your seat, I know they have water in this car. They wouldn't go for a drive in the desert with out water.  Would you?"  Diana asked Jonathan and me.

"Hey, smarty pants, I guess your right," I said trying to annoy Diana as I pulled a canteen from under my seat.

As soon as I put the canteen by my mouth there were gun shots from behind us.  The trunk of our car was getting wholes in it from the bullets being fired at us.

"Ahhhh!  Stop, drop and roll!  Ahhhh!"  Jonathan screamed in the seat next to me.

"Shut your yap and put on your seat belt this is going to be a bumpy ride,"  yelled Diana as she pressed on the gas as hard as she could.

"Aaaaahhhhhhhh! We are all going to die!"  both me and Jonathan screamed from the back seat.

"Think of worse things that could happen than this," Jonathan told me as he whimpered in the seat next to me.

"What's worse than this?" I shouted.

"You're right we're all going to die!  Aaaaaahhhhh!" agreed Jonathan as he screamed.

"WOULD YOU BOTH SHUT UP! LOOK FOR SOMETHING TO DEFEND US --   OR I'LL STOP THIS CAR AND KILL US ALL! OKAY?!"

Jonathan and I fell dead silent as we started looking for guns or any thing that would explode.

"Hey I found some guns!" I started to hand one to Jonathan but thought better of it.

I couldn't stand the thought of killing people if I could avoid it so I carefully aimed at the jeeps’ tires, clenched my jaw and closed my eyes tight.  After the deafening roar of the pistol, I opened my eyes in time to see the two jeeps crash into each other and slowly disappear from sight as we drove away into the deserted desert.

"Great shot," said Diana, "right between the eyes."
