A Path To
Freedom Rebecca
Chapter 10
the CAPTAIN’S STORY
"So what happened, Captain?" I asked him as he shakily finished
putting on his clothes.
His voice was barely a whisper as he began his story. "Well, solider, all I remember is, a couple of days ago, around three-o-clock in the mourning the enemy took a chance and launched themselves into our camp, kamikaze style and gunned down everyone in sight, throwing grenades everywhere. Their survivors didn't stay long, in fear of more of our defenses coming to back us up. My men completely scattered during the attack and I was lucky to get out of there with just a few bumps and bruises. About thirty miles away..."
Jonathan and me started to snicker in disbelief that he even made it a few feet away from that spot, but we were soon sobered at the thought of comrades laying dead in the hot sand. Diana gave us both a hard stern look making us shut up instantly.
"Go ahead captain," said Diana through gritted teeth.
"Well," he coughed and attempted to wet his lips with his dry tongue, "like I was saying, after the troops scattered, about forty miles away, a sandstorm blew in and trapped me under the desert ground. The next thing I remembered is being dragged across the dusty ground by one of the invaders, and having my right hand chained to a wall. That night I think the air force found their location because the place was bombed. I must have a guardian angel because one of the guards accidentally dropped his keys while scrambling to get out of the building to help his comrades. I was so dehydrated that my eyes would not focus properly, but somehow, with the strength I had left, I lifted the keys on my foot and then grabbed them with my free hand, and freed myself."
Captain, T.J. Porter reached toward me and grabbed my shoulder to steady
himself before continuing. "The
fresh air on my face gave me the strength to move on, however, I became more
and more dehydrated the further I went," he wheezed through parched
lips.
"That's when I saw a mirage of an oasis, the next thing I knew…You were stomping on my wig." He stared at me when he was finished with
that same stern look Diana gives me when she is annoyed.
"Well, now we know what happened to you," I said trying to be funny.
"Do you guys have any water," Captain T.J. Porter asked.
"Oh yeah, all you had to do was ask. Here you go," Diana exclaimed happily passing a canteen to the Captain.
"Well we better head out, we just can't stand out here and wait until we run out of water." I shuddered at the thought of it.
