“Chariots of Fire” is a great movie, well-deserving of its Best Picture Oscar.  It is the story of two young men, both competing for Great Britain in the 1924 Olympics.  It is a story of determination, of integrity, and of challenges, both internal and external.

Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) is an extremely competitive Jewish student from Cambridge, battling anti-Semitism, class prejudice, and his own drive to be the best.  Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) is a devout Protestant who feels that running is one of his God-given gifts, and he feels closer to God when running.  He faces a dilemma when his race is scheduled on the Sabbath.

Released in 1981, it marked a resurgence of British Cinema.  The soaring and inspiring Oscar-winning musical score by Vangelis fits the film wonderfully.  Though it was greatly overused, and often parodied, it definitely adds a lot to the movie.  Wonderful supporting actors such as Ian Holm, John Gielgud, and Lindsay Anderson round out the cast.

“Chariots of Fire” is a film that makes you think.  What is your measure of success?  What would you sacrifice and compromise to achieve your goals?  How do you face challenges and others judging you?  These are all important questions to think about before these situations arise.  Watching “Chariots of Fire” is a good way to get yourself, and others, thinking and talking about what is important to you.
