Bruce Nolan’s (Jim Carrey) life is not going well. He’s a television news reporter wanting the anchor spot.  But we don’t always get what we want, and after a live on-air meltdown, Bruce not only loses the anchor spot, but his job as well.  Now Bruce is mad at the world, and especially at God (Morgan Freeman).  And he lets Him know it, too.  So God decides to let Bruce try his hand at it, granting him all of His powers, while God decides to take a vacation.  What happens next is what “Bruce Almighty” is about.

It is quite funny, as one would expect.  Watching Bruce exercise his new powers is like watching a kid running loose in a combination candy store/toy store/video arcade.  He definitely wants it all.  The writing is also very good, with many clever lines and quips like, “Behind every great man... is a woman rolling her eyes.”  And, “Nice to meet you, God. Nice job on the Grand Canyon and good luck with the apocalypse.”

“Bruce Almighty” also looks at the more serious side of our choices and actions, no matter how well-meaning they may be.  Bruce tries to give everyone, including himself, what they ask for, without understanding the consequences.  He also realizes that what we want, or think we want, isn’t necessarily the best thing for us.  Sometimes where we are right now is the best place for us to be.  Sometimes just being the best we can at what we are doing can make us happier and contribute more to the world than anything else.

One word of caution to parents of young children, this film is rated PG-13, and has some language some people may find offensive.
