DISCOVER THE UNITY IN DUALITY

How diverse are you?  Can you get along with those who are different?  Can you embrace opposite ends of the spectrum?

Discover the unity in duality!

It was an unexpectedly warm beautiful day.  The sky was an amazing shade of cobalt blue and the sun shone warmly on my skin; the convertible top happily in the down position. Turning on the radio, I heard the first notes in the classic musical duel…

Although called, “Dueling Banjos” the song is most often played as banjo verses guitar.  The banjo begins its melody pausing long enough to challenge the opposing guitar.  The guitar accepts its opponent’s challenge, striking up its own melody.  Each instrument, seemingly opposite of each other, takes its turn.  The individual melodies are strong, proud, an accomplishment in their own right.

As the duel continues, the notes come faster, the scales shift, and suddenly the two opponents are joined together making beautiful music!  In the blending of their duality, they find an unexpectedly wonderful unity.

If you’ve ever tried to play Dueling Banjos as a single, you know for certain it takes two opposing players to create all the individual notes which make this song so amazing.  Either the banjo or guitar sound good of their own accord.  But coming together at the right frequency, they find harmony and create something much greater than on their own.  Life is like that in so many ways!

We’re often trained to see those who appear different, perhaps even opposite in their beliefs or ways of doing things, as being completely separate from ourselves.  We may even clash at first. But under closer examination we find that “opposites” are actually different ends of the same spectrum.  Black and white may seem like opposing colors but they’re both part of the grayscale spectrum; and even the full color spectrum… one absorbing all color, the other reflecting it.

When dealing with those at different ends of the spectrum, we learn by adjusting our rhythm, our frequency, that we can find a common vibration.  These common vibrations create a new harmonic frequency!  We don’t give up our individual Selves but shift into a complimentary frequency, blending the best of what we have into a new, more unified value, “a major chord” which has a richer, fuller, resonance.

If we keep going in these new frequencies, playing our best, we begin to interact at different level of consciousness and at some point experience the reality of being united in complete harmony.  Instead of being opposite separates we realize we are joined together, synchronized in life’s beautiful melody.

It takes some practice to calibrate ourselves with those who appear to be at different ends of the scale.  If we don’t approach things at the right frequency we might create a “minor” or “diminished” effect, bringing tension into the composition instead of harmony.  Rather than stop playing, we can adjust to a new frequency until we get that harmonic chord again and find ourselves creating beautiful music together.

Whether we favor banjo or guitar, or even violin, piano, keyboard, saxophone, bagpipes or ocarina isn’t as important as finding the harmony with our individual frequencies.
