Joseph
Walker's column,
ValueSpeak,
appears every Thursday.
I've been writing
professionally since 1980, when I left college to join the staff of a daily metropolitan newspaper. For 10 years --
including six as the paper's TV columnist and critic -- I was part of the mainstream media, and I was painfully aware of
the overwhelming negativity of contemporary journalism. Nobody was looking for real solutions to the problems society
was facing; they were just looking for someone or something to blame the problems on.
And so in 1990 I
began writing ValueSpeak, a weekly syndicated column that attempts to look at contemporary issues from the perspective
of traditional values. The column appears in about 30 small hometown newspapers around the country, as well as several
internet publications. I've tried pitching it to larger newspapers and newspaper syndicates, but they don't really
understand what I'm trying to do.
Mostly the column
comes from my own experiences. It's my way of coping with life, and it deals with the things I'm thinking about and the
lessons life is teaching me. My hope is that readers can tie into my experiences with experiences of their own, and
perhaps in this way we can learn and grow together.
My wife, Anita,
and I are parents of five children, and we now have three adorable granddaughters!
